Delphi Day Tour

Tour of Delphi – Temple of Apollo – Theater of Delphi.

The tour has as starting point your hotel or the select by you location. Our first stops, on our way to Delphi, two cities with ancient history, Thebes and Livadia.

Delphi, according to Greek mythology, holds the nickname “The Hump of the Earth”. Arriving in the archaeological site of Delphi, the imposing natural landscape formed between two rocks is the sanctuary of Delphi, is located the most famous oracle of ancient Greece where Pythia gave her oracles. We will visit the Temple of Apollo, the Treasure of the Athenians, the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, the Castalia spring, the ancient Gymnasium and the ancient theater.

Subsequently, we will visit the picturesque Arachova, one of the most beautiful villages in the Greek countryside, where we will enjoy our meal in a landscape with a unique view, after walking down the alleys with its traditional shops, coffee shops and restaurants.

Monastery of Saint Luke

Leaving Arachova behind us, we will be transported to a hillside of Mount Helikon to visit one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine art and architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Monastery of St. Luke.

At the end of the tour the driver will return you to the pickup point or any other location you wish during the return journey.

Thebes

Ancient Thebes was one of the most powerful ancient Greek cities that dominated Greece for a long period of the fourth century BC. It was the most powerful of the Boeotian cities and held a hegemonic position in the Boeotian Common.

2nd stop
Livadia

In historical times, Livadia was famous for the ancient oracle of Trophonius, which had been visited and consulted by Croesus, Mardonius, Emilius Paul and others. He took part in the Boeotian public, having a common currency and followed the fate of the other Boeotian cities. In 395 BC. was looted by Lysander, shortly before the Battle of Aliartos and in 86 BC. where the occupation and looting of the temple of Trophonius took place by Archelaus, general of Mithridates, before the Battle of Chaeronia between him and the Romans under Sulla. Nevertheless, it experienced particular prosperity during the 2nd AD. century because of its many sanctuaries and temples.

The ancient city was built on the right bank of Erkyna, and its ruins came to light after excavations. Most of the buildings (bath, market, street, register) as well as a large number of inscriptions date from the 4th BC. until the 3rd AD century.

Temple of Apollo

The temple was considered the residence of the god Apollo and the seat of his oracle and therefore held a prominent position in the sanctuary.  With the spread of the fame of the oracle of Delphi throughout the then known world, its form had to be worthy of its universal splendor and radiance. According to mythology, the first temple of Apollo built in the area was a rough construction of laurel branches, the second was made of beeswax and feathers, the third was made of copper, while the fourth was built by the mythical architects Trophonius and Agamedes. with the help of Apollo himself.  and was made of stone. This temple was destroyed in 548 BC. from fire and in its place was rebuilt young, luxurious and majestic.

Theater of Delphi

The theater of Delphi is located inside the sanctuary of the god Apollo, in ancient Delphi. Its capacity reaches 5,000 spectators. In ancient times it hosted the competitions of vocal and instrumental music, which were held in the context of the Pythians and various other religious festivals and rituals.
